On one of out nights staying in Murwillambah the YHA owner, Tassie, took a few of us out for the night to Tweed Heads to see a bluegrass band he liked.
The place we went to was a huge complex (shops, casino, hotel, bars etc.) and it was a very odd, but entertaining night. The band (who I think were called the Mountainside Girls or something similar) were great playing all sorts of instruments like violins, mandolins, banjo, accordians and percussion in addition to the guitars and drums. They did some of their own stuff and then loads of random covers which included Irish traditional numbers, old folk songs, Dolly Parton, Green Day and more bizarre songs that you’d never expect to hear in the same set. They played four times whilst we were there and each time all the locals would get up and start dancing. Sounds normal right? Wrong. Most of them were all dressed up and they were doing ballroom dancing whilst the band played. A lot of the couples obviously knew what they were doing and had their routines down. Apart from us English peeps who went along, no one thought it was at all out-of-the-ordinary and were having a great time. Needless to say I didn’t get up and join in (for those that have seen me dance – you know why) so we sat back and enjoyed the show. It was a great night, if a little odd.
